Guidance on use of “Rota-Rods”.
Always use a clutch mechanism on your drill set low on torque until you are completly confident in adjusting upwards, this is to avoid any accidental damage.
Never spin the brush head in a static location for any period of time, when the brush head is spinning, it should be moving up or down the flue.
It is highly recommended that you “manually” and without rotary power assistance, feed the rods to the top of the flue-way. In the case of most cowling's, “tap” the inside hood of the cowling gently to remove any loose tar/creosote down into the flue-way. With power assistance, a quick spin should easily clear a deposit grill area.
From here, use the cordless drill and power sweep whilst moving downward, rod by rod. It is important to move the drill in any direction very slowly, the slower the movement will result in better scrubbing results.
It is also advised to use the “low speed” setting on any drill, until you are completely satisfied the you are fully competent.
The standard rod pack comes with:
10 x 10mm Rods
10 x 12mm Rods
10 x 15mm Rods
3 x Torpedo brush heads
1 x drill adaptor
1 x Generic rod bag.
10mm Rods:
These should be used where there are tight bends.
These must only ever be used in fully lined flues, or just the connecting section of pipe from appliance to register plate or equivalent. It is advisable to use a small section of flexible hose round the first severe bend and use the Hot Rods through this section of pipe to help protect them from abrasion.
12mm Rods:
These can be used in most everyday sweeping jobs. Where the flue-way is lined or standard smaller unlined flues. They can be used with flue-ways that have mild bends. Ideal for small open fires.
15mm:
These are to be used with larger, unlined flue-ways. For larger open fires and Inglenooks, or through the access in register plates, to ensure reliable, supported cleaning of all the flue-way.
Brush heads:
Each Torpedo brush head should have 6 Nylons running through it, with three layers of two nylons.
The length your cut the nylons for each brush head is a case of preference, by we'd suggest:
Small lined flue brush-head: 8”-9”. Medium lined and unlined flues brush-head: 12”-14”. Larder flues: 22”-24”
